2023 Nvidia Shield TV Tips, Tricks & Features.
The new Sheild TV 2020 comes with a host of upgrades over the previous generation, such as the Nvidia Tegra X1 + chip, Dolby Vision, AI-powered upscaling, and of course, a completely redesigned remote. However, not only that has changed. It also comes with new software features and hardware updates that aren’t immediately obvious. Let’s take a look at all the 2020 Shield TV tips, tricks and new features.
If you have a 2017 Shield TV screen, there is little reason to upgrade other than the remote. The new remote is much better than the previous generation. It’s ergonomic, packed with updated features like a backlight, a dedicated Netflix button, and of course, remote search (more on that later). Thankfully, the new remote can also be connected to the old Shield TV and is sold separately on NVIDIA‘s website for just $ 30.
1. Pair the new remote control to your old Shield TV
2. Find your remote control
I think NVIDIA knew about the relationship between sofas and remotes, so they decided to include the remote search feature in the new remote. You can press a button on the Shield TV to turn on the remote. This will beep enough to help you locate the remote.
However, if you want to be lazy and don’t want to get up from the couch, you can still activate the buzzer in settings using your Android smartphone. Go to Settings> Remote & Accessories> SHIELD Accessories> Shield Remote> Find this remote. However, keep in mind that if the remote is dead or out of range of a Wi-Fi signal, it will not be able to find it.
3. Use the Remote New app
As you know, you can use an Android smartphone to control your Shield TV or any Android TV for that matter. However, for Sheild TV 2020, you can use the updated remote app, which includes app and game shortcuts as well as new buttons. To set it up, install the app on Android and it will detect Shield TV on the same Wi-Fi network. Using the application, you can type text from the smartphone keyboard, adjust the volume, and even has a power button.
4. Netflix remap button
Shield TV comes with a huge Netflix button that I don’t use very often. Even though the Shield TV has a reprogrammable button that lets you set whatever action you like, I wanted to remap the Netflix button itself. Luckily, you can remap each button on your remote using this app.
5. Take a screen shot
The 2017 Shield TV had a dedicated interface that allowed screen recording and screenshot capture initially, mainly for gamers. As 2020 attracts a wider audience, this screen recording feature is missing from the Tube version. However, you can still take screenshots on the 2020 model. Go to Settings> Remote & Accessories> SHIELD Accessories> Customize Quick Settings Button> Take Screenshot.
6. IR volume controls
With Shield TV 2020, you can no longer adjust the volume on the Shield TV itself. But then why do we still have volume buttons on the remote? It is designed for a TV or any other audio accessory that you may have connected to your Shield TV. You will need to customize these buttons in Settings.
7. Control the TV with Shield TV
While the remote is equipped with IR illumination, the 2020 Shield TV has HDMI-CEC which lets you do some impressive things. For example, you can set your TV to turn on and off when the Shield wakes up and falls asleep. If you have multiple devices connected to your TV, you can set up Shield TV to switch the HDMI source when it wakes up. However, if your TV does not support HDMI-CEC, you can still use the IR sensor to turn on the TV.
8. Set the cooling fan
Both NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro and Tube have a built-in cooling fan that can sometimes get loud enough to distract you. You can adjust the fan speed settings. Select Settings> Device Settings> System> Fan Mode> Cool or Quiet.
9. Upgrading artificial intelligence
It may seem like a gimmick or gimmick, but it’s a legitimate feature on Shield TV 2020. AI upscaling aims to expand 720p and 1080p content to 4K without pixelating footage using machine learning. This comes in handy if you have a 4K TV, but your streaming services are running at 1080p, the system is implemented inside the device, so it works without any lag or jitter. You can activate this feature by going to Settings> AI Scaling> AI-Enhanced, Enhanced, or Basic.
10. Sideload applications
It would be useless if you bought Shield TV and didn’t download any apps to it. One of the benefits of owning an Android device is that you can easily download apps and use apps that weren’t even originally designed for Android TV. You can read more about this in the article here.
Although most applications work when downloading unpublished applications, if some applications are built exclusively for 64-bit, they may not work. So, if you’re planning on using a Dolphin emulator, I’ll hold my breath.
11. Go to Sideloaded Apps
If you install an unpublished download application that was not specifically built for Android TV, you run into problems. For example, the Shield TV remote is not recognized by apps, so you cannot use them, at least without assistance. Enter the mouse switch; an app that simulates a mouse pointer on your TV and makes it easy to navigate your downloaded apps with just the remote control.
12. Browse the Internet
Most Android TVs are designed for a relaxed environment and therefore don’t even have a web browser. You can download the unpublished Puffin TV browser, which is specially designed for Android TV and has a user-friendly interface. If you want to get serious, you can also install other web browsers on Android TV, such as Google Chrome, and use it with the Mouse Toggle app, or connect a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
13. Use a Bluetooth controller
Just like you can connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to the Shield TV to surf the web, you can also connect a Bluetooth game controller for gaming. Shield TV 2020 supports Xbox, PS4, and third party Bluetooth controllers. While the Xbox works flawlessly, the PS4 controller usually has key mapping issues, and the accuracy of third party controllers varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
14. Switch applications
Apart from all these intuitive features on Shield TV, one of my favorites is; Application switcher. As with regular smartphones, you can switch between different applications by double-tapping the Home button. Easy, right?
15. Game like a pro
Even though the 2020 Shield TV doesn’t include a game controller, it’s still very game-oriented. NVIDIA GeForce NOW and NVIDIA GameStream are built into Shield TV, you can install your own game streaming applications such as SteamLink. All these apps make it one of the most powerful Android TVs built for gaming.
16. Access to hard drives like the chair
Continuing this tradition, the Shield TV Pro 2020 includes two USB 3.0 ports that allow you to access high-quality media content from your existing hard drives. You only need a good quality file manager and VLC media player to access the entire library. Guess only Shield TV supports Plex, so you can build a Plex Media Server on the device itself and stream your content all over the web. This is really a pro.
Best Shield TV Tips, Tricks and Features
So these were some of my favorite features and tricks that I discovered while using. I agree, not all of the features on this list are exclusive, but they cover the entire Android TV segment. However, features like Plex Media Server, remote features, AI scaling are exclusive to the 2020 version of Shield TV. If I am missing something, let me know in the comments below so I can update it to this list. Buy: Nvidia Sheild TV 2020 on Amazon
