Looking for a way to recover password for Outlook PST file? I recently tried to download an old PST file that I used at my previous company many years ago, but realized that a password was set for it. I’ve tried every passwords I’ve ever used but nothing seems to work.
Finally, I had to resort to using one of these PST password recovery programs to get access to the file. He didn’t actually give me the exact password I originally used, but he gave me another password that allowed me to unlock the file.
In this article, I will write several tools that can be used to recover PST password. Some programs are free, which I mention first, and all others are paid. Always try the free options first before making any purchases.
Free PST recovery tools
PstPassword – This free tool from NirSoft is the safest and easiest to use, but it officially only works from Outlook 97 to Outlook 2007. It has been updated to find the PST file for Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016, but it is not guaranteed to work.
This is one of the simplest programs because all you have to do is launch the program and that’s it. You don’t even need to install anything. The program will automatically find PST files if you have Outlook installed and provide you with up to three possible passwords that should work for the file. You can also download the PST file manually, if you like, by dragging and dropping it into the program window.

Kernel PST Password Recovery Tool – This program is also free, but again, it only works up to Outlook 2010. Most of the free tools work with older versions of Outlook. Obviously, they want you to pay for password recovery in newer versions of Outlook, as this is what most people use.
It is a very easy to use program. Just click Open, select the PST file and click Recover Password. Hopefully, you will be given a password, which you can then copy to your clipboard. That’s all about this program.
These are really the only two free and safe tools I could find. If you have a newer version of Office installed, you will likely need to use one of the paid programs listed below. It’s worth noting that most of the paid programs have free trials that can at least tell you if your password can be recovered. In some cases, instead of the entire password, one or two characters are displayed. This way you will at least know if you are spending money and access your PST file.
Paid PST Recovery Tools
Most of the sites below provide detailed program information on their product pages, so I’ll give you a quick overview here. Please make sure your version of Outlook is supported before purchasing.

Interlore Password Recovery
This program costs $ 29.95 but hasn’t been updated for a couple of years. It supports all versions of Outlook up to 2013. It may work in Outlook 2016, but since it costs the same as similar programs that have recently been updated, I don’t recommend using it.
Hopefully one of the above programs can get you back to your PST file without too much trouble. Always back up your original file before using any of these tools, as they can damage your files. Enjoy!
