Whether you’re a fan of action-adventure, RPG fanatic, or just looking to hang out in the sandbox, there is a single-player game for you on this list.
1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is considered one of the greatest single-player RPG games. As Geralt of Rivia, an elite monster hunter, you begin your journey in search of the lost apprentice who became the target of the Wild Hunt, an army of interdimensional ghosts with whom Geralt has a long history.
This journey takes you through the incredibly detailed and complex open world of the Witcher universe, where dozens of side quests, monster rewards and puzzles to explore are unlocked in each new location.
With an expansive storyline offering roughly 100 hours of gameplay, and three highly rated DLCs, each adding 20-40 hours, The Witcher 3 will keep you busy for a long time.
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim should be on any list of the best single-player PC games. Released back in 2011 (and since then revamped) Skyrim is a quintessential RPG. You find yourself in a colossal open world when your character wakes up in the carriage and learns that you are on the way to execution.
Thanks to a massive level system in which each type of weapon, armor and magic has its own skill tree, you can progress through the story like any character you can imagine.
And in classic Elder Scrolls style, dedicated fans have developed tens of thousands of mods that expand the base game far beyond its original scope. Throw in three DLCs and you’ve got hundreds of hours of content to play through.
3. Minecraft
Another classic PC game, Minecraft is a timeless single player choice. Create a new procedurally generated world and quickly build yourself a shelter before dark. The rest is up to you.
Minecraft is a relaxing, creative, single-player PC game in which you fight mobs, build constructions, and progress towards increasingly rare materials. Since this is a sandbox game and the world is virtually endless, this is a great game to choose if you want to have fun. There are also hundreds of mods and mod packs to choose from, some of which require thousands of hours of content.
4. Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the newest game in this article and one of the best single-player PC games released in recent years. Whether you want to focus on an expansive quest chain, become a wanted criminal, or simply explore the stunning open world, the game is made to be totally immersive.
Red Dead Redemption 2 takes a while to focus on the characters and their motives, the varied environments, and the world of the Old West in general. There’s an incredible amount of content here, and everything really makes you feel like you’re right there in the Wild West.
5. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
If you liked the original Ori and the Blind Forest, Will of the Wisps is not a problem. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a fun platformer. The story begins with Ori trying to find the owlet, Ku. Ori then discovers and learns a variety of moves and combat abilities that add depth to the game as you progress.
To progress, you often need to practice a complex jumping pattern that combines jumps, rolls, slides and grabs to get to another area. It can be tricky, but figuring it out (and the overall feel of the game) is incredibly enjoyable.
Set in one of the most beautifully designed worlds with an almost universally acclaimed art style, Ori is more of an experience than a game.
6. Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a turn-based RPG set in a world where sorcerers harvest and drain them. Starting with a ship at sea in a “tutorial deck”, you quickly learn how detailed and complex the game is. You can interact with almost everything in the world, and many secrets are hidden behind seemingly ordinary objects.
Even at the easiest difficulty level, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is not easy. If you like games that require strategy and well-thought-out character development, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the single-player PC game for you.
7. Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is still incredibly popular despite being an indie game released in 2016 and one of the best 2D PC games out there. You start out on your grandfather’s old farm and must return it to its former glory while making friends, money, and achievements along the way.
Essentially a farming simulator (with some interesting twists), Stardew Valley gives you a feeling that’s both beneficial, relaxing, and addictive at the same time. And the good news is that its developer ConcernedApe is still releasing annual updates and bringing new content to the game.
8. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Fallen Order takes place between the prequel film trilogy and the original film trilogy, after the appearance of Darth Vader but before the appearance of Luke Skywalker. Your character is Cal Kestis, a scrapper who discovers that he is force-sensitive as the Sith hunt them down across the galaxy.
An action-adventure game that lives up to its name, Fallen Order takes many popular aspects of previous Star Wars games and builds on them. By the end of the game, Cal has become a real god of power, which is a lot of fun. With an interesting storyline, great cutscenes and a beautiful soundtrack, Fallen Order is a great choice.
9. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Kingdom Come: Deliverance got a lot of hype as it advertised its medieval simulator gameplay, and after a few updates, it managed to live up to it. You control Henry, a blacksmith who lives in a city where silver is mined. Starting with a peasant, you are very far from a capable warrior at the beginning of the game.
Kingdom Come offers some of the most realistic battles in the game, a great soundtrack, historical details and many skills to use and develop. In fact, alchemy is similar to alchemy, and if you don’t keep it clean, people won’t respect you. If this sounds like your game, why not give it a try?
10. Doom Eternal
Our final entry on this list is Doom Eternal, the highly anticipated sequel to the Doom franchise. In Doom Eternal, demons have invaded Earth, and your task is to destroy them. Use an arsenal of powerful weapons and engage in the smooth and destructive carnage that Doom is famous for.
Usually considered a significant improvement over the 2016 reboot, Doom Eternal is oddly enjoyable to play. Finally, we got a storyline and some backstory from Slayer’s past that definitely adds to the experience of this single-player PC game.
